Welcome to our blog! Moscana was founded 3 years ago to promote Mediterranean artisans and designers. Creativity and craftmanship is firmly rooted in Mediterranean culture and we’ve traveled across countries to find the very best examples of these traditions. We want this blog to be a space where we can share with you what is unique about each and every one of our products, what our brand represents, and what we belive is so special about our work.
One of the very first products we created was our peshtemal. A peshtemal is a Turkish towel that is flat-woven on a loom with hand-tied fringe. They were traditionally used in Turkish baths, or hamams, and are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional terry cloth towels. They are ultra-absorbent and lightweight so they require less energy to wash and dry. Peshtemals are ubiquitous in Turkey, and we’re happy to see the rest of the world is catching on.
When the Moscana online shop first opened, there were plenty of peshtemal options to choose from, but no one seemed to offer the quality we were looking for. We decided to make our own and since then, our collection has grown to include over 40 different styles. We have vibrant cotton honeycomb and stripe peshtemals made from the highest quality Turkish cotton, silk and bamboo.
Wondering what the difference is between peshtemal, a fouta, a Turkish towel or a hamam towel? Absolutely nothing. Whatever you call them, you cannot go wrong with a peshtemal. You can use them as your everyday bath towel, they’re easy to roll up and take with you as a beach towel or picnic blanket, and they even make a great rustic tablecloth. The possibilities are endless!
